Oh Fox News. Fox News is essentially an agglomeration of “respectable” racists, the new-right conservatives, who present their bigoted views in a manner in which the overt bigotry and prejudice is more subtle, but the support for stirring up racism and prejudice is evident. For example, Fox News continually played Jeremiah Wright’s (President Obama’s former pastor) radical speeches long after it was news worthy. The purpose of this is to stir up emotions and resentment among their mainly white audience against “the other.” Of significant note is how Fox News stirs up Islamophobia. They continuously invite a man name Anjem Choundary to their show.
For those who do know, Anjem Choundery is a total clown who holds absolutely no influence over the majority of Muslims. He specializes in making incendiary Anti-Western remarks and praising terrorist attacks. Anjem Choundary has stated:
“Every woman, Muslim or Non-Muslim, will one day wear the Burka.”
When asked about tolerance and Islam, he responded:
“Well if the divine text agrees with it- we tolerate it. If it does not- we will not tolerate it. Alcohol, homosexuality, adultery, fornication, pornography, we will not tolerate.”
His group is pretty similar to Westborough Baptist Church whose slogan is “God Hates Fags.” Anjem Choundary does not have the support of the majority of Muslims. In fact, there is a video of Anjem Choundary walking in a Muslim community and many Muslims are shown telling him to leave and publically denouncing him. Several mainstream Muslim organizations have contacted Fox News and CNN, which routinely give Anjem Choundary chances to express his views, in order to denounce his remarks and to explain what Islam is really about, but they were told “it’s not newsworthy.” Anjem Choundary, on the other hand, seems like he has news stations on speed dial and is welcomed to speak on Fox News and others freely. Ajnem Choundary is introduced as an “IMAM”(An Imam is the Christian equivalent to a pastor) while on Fox News, when he isn’t actually an Imam. He is just a radical who hosts chat rooms on the internet and has a group of maybe 30 members.
So why give interviews and news attention to him and not a respectable Imam in a Muslim community? Why? It’s because the media wants to incite hatred and fear for Muslims so they found the most extremist they can to interview. Sean Hannity bombards Anjem Choundary with a variety of questions; first he asks about the uprising in Egypt and how repressive Islam is towards women. Choundary responds:
CHOUDARY: Let me tell you something, the people of Egypt are not upset with Islam and the Sharia. They want to be free from the American hegemony in the area, they want to be free to support their brothers in Gaza, They don’t want the freedom that you are propagating in America which is torture and mayhem in Guantanamo Bay, bombing in Iraq and Afghanistan…
HANNITY: Sir, you speak of freedom — but you would force women –
CHOUDARY: I don’t think the people of Egypt are envious of the American government and what you’re doing. You don’t have a decent way of life that you can export to our country
HANNITY: Let me ask you a question, sir, we hear a lot about suicide bombers and we hear a lot about that when they kill innocent men, women and children, the name of Allah is part of Jihad, that they get 72 virgins when they kill innocent people and go to heaven, do you believe that, sir?
CHOUDARY: That’s complete nonsense…. Nobody kills innocent men, women and children, apart from organizations like black water and the ISI at the use of the Americans, you know, in Pakistan –
HANNITY: I’m a nonbeliever, I’m a infidel. If I don’t convert to Islam, should I die?
CHOUDARY: No, you can live under the Sharia, your food, clothing and shelter will be provided –
HANNITY: But I must live as a citizen under Sharia, I’ve got to live under your caliphate and your way of life. And if I don’t, I’ll die. I’ll be killed and you will feel justified. And you’ll be rewarded in heaven.
CHOUDARY: No. Where are you getting information from? Look, you need to do more research. You cannot base your understanding of Islam on one trip to the library.
HANNITY: My understanding of Islam is exactly accurate.
CHOUDARY: You’re very immature –
Just as Anjem Choundary is a clown, so is Sean Hannity. The fact that Sean Hannity is a professional journalist with such ignorant questions baffles me. Anyone with basic knowledge of Islam cannot do anything but laugh at Sean Hannity’s bizarre questions. The entire interview between the two men was one big ignorancefest. Islam does not permit the killing of the innocent and there is nothing in the Qu’ran that rewards people with 72 virgins for doing so.
Take not life, which God hath made sacred.[Quran 6:151]
If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind.[Quran 5:32]
As for as the rights of non-Muslims within Islam, as the statesmen of Medina, Muhammad allowed Christian and Jewish tribes to freely worship and secured their rights in the future with this statement:
“Beware! Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their rights, or burdens them with more than they can bear, or takes anything from them against their free will; I (Prophet Muhammad) will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment.”
“Let there be no compulsion in religion”
Unlike, Anjem Choundary, I certainly do not believe Sharia should be implemented in America or any western societies. However, I do believe it deserves to be studied objectively within academia just as communism, socialism, and capitalism are studied. Simply put, Sharia is an alternative political-economic system, such as capitalism, communism, and socialism. Sharia in West Africa introduced women’s education and the Al-jebra and numeral system. Sharia in Spain sparked the renaissance and enlightenment age in Europe.
So the Taliban’s expression of Sharia is indeed very repressive but it certainly isn’t the only manifestation of Sharia. One wouldn’t criticize communism or socialism without having a basic understanding of it and reading books such as “The Communist Manifesto” to get an understanding of it. However, when it comes to Sharia, people get scared.
Moreover, the Burka is not even a religious obligation imposed on Muslim women. Most scholars agree they are only obligated to wear the hijab or headscarf. Less than 2% of Muslims wear the Burka. So the idea that Anjem Choundary is going to force not only Muslim but non-Muslim women to wear the burka is absurd and has no basis in Islam. But Sean Hannity continues to bring him on his show.
Sean Hannity also asks the question, “Why can’t women drive under Sharia in Saudia Arabia?”
Saudia Arabia is a monocracy. This is obviously not Sharia which has a totally different structure of government. Additionally, Saudi Arabia has interest banking, which is something that is not permitted under Sharia. Additionally, the driving ban on women in Saudia Arabia is totally cultural having absolutely nothing to do with Islam.
But Fox News wants to stir up hatred and fear of Muslims so they’ll bring a radical Muslim on their show and claim he is an imam that represents the majority of Islamic views when in reality the extent of his importance is being the moderator of a chat room
