How many niggas gonna die this summer?

Rahm Emanuel is a man with absolutely no integrity. He could benefit from reading a couple of my articles where I discuss the importance of politicians being trustworthy. I was watching a documentary on CBS called “The War in Chicago” which discussed gang violence in Chicago; the piece focused on a young sister I attended school with and the Chicago Debate Summer Institute who, unfortunately, was shot and killed. After her death, Chicago’s homicide rate decreased significantly. Not because of any socioeconomic changes or policies of social justice, but simply because there was more police patrolling the streets and targeting gang hotspots in an Iraqi-like surge manner; officers in the area placed emphasis on confiscating guns and performing drug raids. However, the amount of police working overtime is costing Chicago loads of money – and the city may not be able to afford it in the future.

So, a news reporter questioned Rahm Emanuel about the longevity of his policies, but Emanuel refused to answer the question and explicitly stated he would answer his question later after other reporters had their turn. Get this: he said—“I promise!” But after the other reporters had their turn to ask their utterly insignificant questions of no concern to the survival of black youth—Rahm Emanuel walked out! The news reporter who wanted to ask about Chicago’s gang-violence—blustered his question out, saying, “You promised Rahm Emanuel!” but Ramn Emanuel walked out, refusing to answer, and turned his back to the reporter – a symbolic gesture indicating his feelings regarding black youth throughout the inner-city of Chicago.

All politicians lie and break promises. But Rahm Emanuel literally broke a simple promise to answer a question within a couple of minutes of making it. Perhaps Rahm Emanuel could learn from street gangs—even the most bloody and hardcore street gangs have ethics such as, “My word is my bond,” demonstrating the importance of fulfilling promises. I have long suspected Rahm Emanuel of not caring about black people, and its becoming very clear with every passing day. Recently, he closed down the RedLine for some alleged reconstruction plan. The problem with that? The RedLine is practically the exclusive method for the black community to travel downtown.

By the time of age nine I’m already decidin’
If I can protect mommy from the hood by fightin’
Or usin’ a knife or a gun when I’m twenty-one
By by then them hoods woulda pushed their way in our apartment
And we die then, so I been a young nervous wreck in the projects…–Nas

How many niggaz gon’ die this summer?

While living in New Orleans, I would always draw a star on myself out of childhood boredom. When my mother saw it, she informed me never to draw that on myself while visiting my grandmother in Chicago because some could interpret as a gang sign. I did not understand at the time, but while in middle school my family and I moved to Chicago. I was the new kid in class and the most frequent question they asked me after my name was, “What you is?” and, “Are you one of those hurricane Katrina refugees?”

I was confused by the, “What you is?” question – it was grammatically incorrect and I had no idea how to answer it. But I would eventually learn that these students – all between eleven to twelve – were asking for my gang affiliation. The school had numerous gangs in it: Gangsta Disciples, Black P Stones, and Black Disciples.

I, of course, as someone who recently moved to Chicago, belonged to no gang at all. I eventually befriended a kid who was pretty bright and, like me, he did not belong to any gang. My mother used to pick him after school and drive him to his house. He often expressed fear walking to school by himself, scared that he would be caught in a shootout and he often expressed his plans for the future to start a business and work to combat gang violence.

After graduating from that middle school and going on to high school (King College Prep), me and my old friend lost contact. But, a few days ago I received a friend-request from him on Facebook. On his page, I saw multiple postings, pictures and signs which indicated he had joined a gang. How could someone who once spoke to me so positively, expressing his plans indicating he had such a bright future, be caught up in such a violent culture?

The reality is, gang culture is thoroughly ingrained within impoverished Chicago Black youth and is a product of institutionalized racism. One does not have to go out and actively pursue a gang leader to join a gang; instead, gangs are almost entirely determined by ones neighborhood, and kids join them for protection, money and respect. Let’s take the Chicago neighborhood of Englewood as an example. When blacks first began to move in, whites formed neighborhood associations with slogans like: “America for Whites, Africa The Only Place for Niggers.” One white lady protesting this “injustice” said, “We don’t want them, we don’t want to live with them. I think they’re savages.”

While these whites portrayed African-Americans as savages, all the behavior that whites were involved in to defend against integration were of that very nature. After a rumor that a house in Englewood was going to be purchased by a black family, whites began to carry out bombings, physical assaults, and arson on black residents for simply trying to live their lives. After putting up posters saying “NEGROES INVADING,” a bunch of white racists came together starting the “EngleWood Race Riots of 1949.” As African-Americans continued to move in, “a white plight” took place as whites moved to suburban areas, leaving the black community in absolute turmoil, chaos, and social decay. The violence in Chicago and formations of gangs is a direct result of such injustices.

Chicago street gangs are a product of social conditions created by institutional racism, police brutality, and white vigilantism. Chicago’s state-sanctioned racism produces “thugs” and systematically strips the morality from people, replacing it with a stone cold heart that is seen as necessary to survive on these mean streets. The obstacles that were, and still are, put in place to halt black socioeconomic aspirations has resulted in black youth acquiring detrimental social, economic, and political habits that are exemplified in the gangs that roam Chicago’s streets.

What is missing from the conversation of Chicago’s gang violence is the role that institutional racism plays in maintaining, sustaining, and facilitating gang violence in Chicago. Perhaps the overtime pay that goes to the Chicago Police Department to invade and monitor black neighborhoods should instead go to fund social policies and jobs that can address the root cause of this violence.  Until then, the question must be asked, “How many niggas gonna die this summer?”

Black Literature of Revolutionary Protest from Chicago’s South Side: A Local …

5 Must Have Habits to Make it Out the Hood

“Nothing left for us but hoop dreams and  either that or rap
We want the fast way outta this trap.” –Nas

Many black youth, through no fault of their own, find themselves trapped in hopeless situations, in ghettos living in abject poverty, regularly experiencing hardships and violence. How does one make it out of this life of despair without breaking down and falling victim to the streets? There has recently been a plethora of books published, with its targeted  demographic being white businessmen, on habits to become successful and powerful in life. Some of these books include 48 Laws of Power, 7 habits of highly effective people, Think and Grow Rich, etc. Unfortunately, many of these books and seminars involve being conniving, deceitful, and manipulative – meaning that they are absolutely unacceptable for anyone of good character to follow.

Besides, the man who is widely regarded as the most successful, powerful, and influential person in world history exhibited none of these traits.

“My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world’s most influential persons may surprise some readers….but he was the  only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level.” – Michael Hart

“I think if we should look to the life of the Prophet – we have a model of how we should live our lives.” – Karen Armstrong

This article is for people of all religious/non-religious backgrounds. My decision to extrapolate principles from the Prophet’s life is not because of my personal religious beliefs, but rather because he is widely considered – even by highly regarded secular figures, such as Karen Armstrong and Micheal Hart – to be the most successful example of a level-headed, morally conscious and positive role model for all people in general.
By looking at and expropriating how he lived his life, we can formulate useful guidelines and habits to achieve success.

1)      Seek Knowledge

“Seeking knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim- male and female.” – The Prophet Muhammad

“The ink of a scholar is worth more than the blood of a martyr.” –The Prophet Muhammad

“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”
― Malcolm X

Although schools in many inner-city communities are depleted and deteriorated, dropping out of school should never be an option. Stick it out, preserve, and graduate. But seeking knowledge should never be restricted to academic knowledge within the confines of school. One should always supplement that knowledge with other knowledge. Gaining access to knowledge is easier our era than it’s been in any other era of human history. There are multiple tools out there, resources such as Google Books, and we can literally learn the basics of a foreign language simply by researching and practicing online. There is free knowledge out there covering a wide variety of topics from science, to sociology, to business and investment tips. Take advantage of it.

Don’t have a computer? Go to your local library and use the internet – not for idle speech on Facebook or Twitter – but for seeking knowledge. And while you’re at it, search the library’s catalog and find some good books to build your vocabulary.

But it is not enough to seek or even gain  knowledge if one does not apply it. This article is a form of knowledge, but without applying it it’s of no benefit to you.

                                                                                    2)      Be Frugal & Abstain From Materialism

” As we are on this road of life, should we not share this gift of hope in the way it was shared with the prophets of the past with the people? “– Unknown

Many brothers in the hood want to be “fresh,” spending excessive amounts of money on Ralph Lauren Polos, True Religion clothes, Gucci Hats, Air Jordans, and belts – clothes that are entirely outside of their budget. Everytime a new pair of Jordan shoes comes out, it is not uncommon for inner-city black youth to hoard and crowd stores in an effort to get the first pair. If you want to be successful, abstain from such vain materialism. Never under any circumstance waste money purchasing drugs rather it be Alcohol or Marijuana.

The Qur’an states: “Satan only wants to cause hostilities among you all with alcoholic drinks and gambling. So strictly avoid it in order that you may be successful.”

‘The Prophet Muhammad’s morals were that of the Qu’ran.”– Ayesha
When one looks at the life of the Prophet Muhammad, we find he never dressed lavishly. He never wore silk or gold. He never purchased drugs.  When he would meet with other world leaders, people would often ask, “Which one of you is Muhammad?” which indicates he never distinguished himself from common everyday people. When a man named Umar came into Muhammad’s place of residence, he was shocked to see how simple and frugally he lived as a world leader. He told Muhammad of how the rulers of Rome and Persia lived lavishly with gold and other signs of materialistic wealth, and he went on to say how he deserved the same as a ruler of such a vast emperor. But he rejected Umar’s offers.

“Ther’s no eatin of the swine. Nor drinkin’ of the wine. ” Lupe Fiasco

Materialism and the desire to look “fresh” through buying the latest clothes is a waste of money. Save what little money you have in the bank and earn interest. Saving a little bit consistently over time builds up. Additionally, if you are in a predicament where you must sell drugs to survive and you’re bringing in fast money, don’t waste it on clothes and don’t plan on staying in the illegal economy forever. Instead, save up your money and invest it in something legitimate – a business franchise, or your own small business, and leave the drug trade as soon as you can.

Listen: I absolutely ABHOR drugs, including marijuana and alcohol usage.    But if you are in a condition where you must sell drugs out of economic necessity to survive—and you are bringing in fast money – it is wiser to use the profits to invest in a legitimate enterprise, not increasing your chances of self-destruction.

3)      Be Disciplined, Steadfast and Consistent.

“Muhammad Ya Rasool Allah You were so caring and kind Your soul was full of light You are the best of mankind.” — Maher Zain

Self-discipline is a must have attribute for success. Self-discipline is broadly defined as abstaining from temporary pleasures for a more long term benefit. Temporary pleasure equals long term pain, while temporary pain equals long term pleasure. One must be able to sacrifice short term pleasures to accomplish long term goals.

The Prophet Muhammad indicated that those who seek the temporary pleasure of the worldly life (drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, etc.)will have their affairs set astray in this life by God, and that they will face punishment in the life to come. However, those who abstain from forbidden pleasures and undergo the pain of discipline will have their affairs ordered in this life and will also be rewarded in the hereafter.

Many people know the benefits of self-discipline, which is broadly defined as abstaining from temporary pleasures for a more long term goal. The Qu’ran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad take it a step further. The Qu’ran indicates the ultimate form of self-discipline is to abstain from the temporary pleasures of this life for the reward in the hereafter.

“.. Those who had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord and restrained their soul from lower desires, Their abode will be paradise.” (Quran, Those Who Drag Forth, Surah 79)
The need for self-discipline comes up many times in our daily lives. You may have to study for an exam, but your friends may tempt you by asking you to hang out with them. You may have work out or dietary goals, but don’t feel like working out or feel tempted by foods you know breaks your diet. You have to persevere and remember the long term implications of your actions at all time.

4)      Be One Who Plans & Practice Time-Management & Pray

Professor K. S. Ramakrishna Rao has been quoted as saying:

“The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes! There is Muhammad the Prophet. There is Muhammad the Warrior; Muhammad the Businessman; Muhammad the Statesman; Muhammad the Orator; Muhammad the Reformer; Muhammad the Refuge of Orphans; Muhammad the Protector of Slaves; Muhammad the Emancipator of Women; Muhammad the Judge….. All in all these magnificent roles, in all these departments of human activities, he is like a hero.”

When we look at the life of the Prophet Muhammad, we learn he not only did many things, but he was also successful in all of them. How was he able to do these things? He planned and managed his time.

Planning is a must. One should plan for goals and their daily tasks a day in advance, weeks in advance, months in advance, years in advance and decades in advance. Set goals for the future and write down three consistent behaviors to achieve those goals. One tool to help assist with this is this daily taskinator which allows you to organize your time around certain events. As well as  the ‘goal setter’ which is a good template for setting goals. One should fill the taskinator chart out before going to sleep to plan the day the next day—try to stick to your schedule, but be flexible and realize that there will always be events or circumstances you are unable to plan for. This will have you effectively manage your time.

Additionally, one must avoid being a time waster. 2K13 and playing video games or “getting high with my niggas” are ultimate time wasters of absolutely no benefit. Kamal El-Mekki indicates:

“Brothers play video games all day; NBA 2K13 wasting their lives. Your life is time. Every time you waste time you are committing a mini-suicide. The scholars that you see today, they all started young. You have to start young. There has never been a time like this in history. Not just in the Muslim world, but in all humanity. Knowledge is widely accessible. But also entertainment is widely accessible. So you have a choice to make. You can spend your time obtaining knowledge or watching  youtube clips all day or video games.”

Prayer is also important. Humans have minds, bodies and souls, all of which must be taken care of. You take care of the mind through intellectual activities – the body by exercise and good food choices, but how do you take care of the soul? You have to isolate yourself, pray and meditate to take care of the soul. Often times when people even of great material wealth fail to take care of the soul they feel like something is missing in their lives, so they’ll go bungee jumping or turn to alcohol or drugs all because they aren’t taking care of their soul.

So pray regularly, take care of your soul, and turn all your calamities over to your creator. The Prophet himself was meticulous about praying and performed them at fixed time.

5) Exercise Regularly & Be Of Good Health

One should always exercise regularly. Not just basketball as many people in the hood like to do, but they should also participate in weight-lifting, martial arts, boxing, etc. Many park districts offer free boxing classes. I know many brothers like to workout to pull the sisters—but this is the wrong motivation and is done in vain—the Prophet taught that the body that your soul inhabits is a gift from God. As a result, you have an obligation to take care of it through regular exercise and good health.

When you eat nutritious food and exercise regularly, you won’t feel sluggish or lazy throughout your daily tasks and will be able to perform them with absolute productivity.

The Prophet Muhammad was of superb physical strength. One day, a man who was renowned for being the best warrior and wrestler in Arabia came to Muhammad saying he would convert to Islam if Muhammad beat him in a wrestling match. Muhammad told him to bring it on and within a matter of seconds Muhammad slammed the man to the ground with ease. The man came up with an excuse and said he slipped and challenge him again—only to end up with the same result: Muhammad put him to the ground within a matter of seconds. Another time, the Prophet Muhammad was chilling under a tree unarmed when a man came up to him with a sword.

He was asked, ”Who can save you now?”

The Prophet calmly responded, “God.”

Then within a matter of seconds he was able to take this man’s sword from him and knock him to the ground and posed the same question to him. The Prophet Muhammad was described as being as shy and gentle as a virgin woman on her wedding day but as ferocious in battle as a Lion. Remember, he was well into his forties and fifties when these wars were taking place. So there is no doubt that being in optimal physical shape can benefit us throughout our daily activities.

Islam & Racism in the Arab World

“Among God’s signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the diversity of your languages and colors. Surely in this are signs indeed for people who have knowledge of the facts in creation and who are free of prejudices.” ar-Rum 30:22

Historians and anthropologists have inculcated into the societal consciousness, so thoroughly, the false belief that black equals failure, black equals incapable and that blacks have been subjugated throughout world history.   The achievements of blacks have been systematically denied and ostracized; sentiments of black inferiority pervade every aspect of European culture. But Anti-Black Sentiments transcend the West and rampant  in the Arab world. Recently, a Lebanese singer, Haifa Wehbe,  referred to Nubians as “Monkeys”,  and during the Arab Spring of Libya; many blacks were slaughtered wholesale by Arabs.  Moreover, the history of the  ‘Arab Slave Trade’ was a gross injustice perpetrated on Black People. ‘The word Abd is also an Islamic term which some utilize to call themselves the slaves of God. However, in the Middle East many have turned this word into an epithet for black people to denote slaves.

This violence and racism of the Arab World has led to many people to criticize Islam as a source for Arab Imperialism and Racism towards Black People. A blogger named “Godless and Black” expressed such views:

” Islam came on the point of a sword. Why then do so many Black people believe Islam to be the true religion of African people when it is not an indigenous religion but rather one adopted by African leaders in order to increase their profit and power and forced upon poor Africans by Arab raiders?

The proliferation of Islam in Africa, just like that of Christianity among Black Americans, is yet another example of the conquered adopting the religion of their conquerors. Just as with Christianity, had Africans not fallen prey to Arab slave traders, had Arabs never acquired a taste for Nubian slaves, far fewer of the millions of devout Muslims in Africa would be Muslims today. “ [1]

Such views demonstrate a lack of understanding of Islam’s Early and the actions of the Prophet Muhammad.

Islam: The Earliest Black Power Movement In History

Pre-Islamic Arabia, specifically before the rise of the Prophet Muhammad, was characterized by tribalism, senseless wars, slavery, and economic inequality. Tribe and lineage took precedence over ethical decisions and morality.

There was no unified Arab Race in existence, and these tribes waged war over trivial causes.  The society lacked law and order. Female off-spring would often be killed at birth, as the society  valued sons over daughters.  Pagan Arab elites would charge gullible, mostly poor, people to worship various Gods made of clay and wood. This inhumane practice drastically exacerbated the rich and poor gap.  In addition to these injustices, slavery ran rampant  in Pre-Islamic Arabian society. When the Prophet Muhammad began teaching Islam it was very revolutionary as Pagan Arab Elites began to lose out on wealth

Islam began to spread rapidly among the poor, orphans, women, slaves and downtrodden members of society precisely because it elevated their social position.    One of these slaves was a Black Man  of Ethiopian heritage named Bilal. His slave-master suspected that he was visiting Muhammad and began torturing him outside.   Muhammad, disgusted by Bilal’s treatment, sent for his friend Abu Bakr to purchase  his freedom.  Bilal was then freed and would go on to be a great friend of Muhammad and be the first man to preform the call of prayer, a highly prestigious position in the Muslim world.

Bilal,  one of the first black converts to Islam,  was not forced to become Muslim by the sword.  Rather, he himself chose Islam to the dismay of his slave-master because of its stance against oppression.

Thus, in early Islam we actually see Black people leaving Arab Captivity and entering positions of prestige- not the reverse.  Islam, and its message of universal brotherhood and sisterhood was a response to Arab injustices and prejudices towards Black People.

Islam’s elevation of Black people is not limited to Bilal.  There was also another slave named Zayd whom Muhammad freed and adopted as a son. Zayd’s son,  Usama, would then be chosen by Muhammad as a military general at the age of 19.  In a biography about Muhammad, the author Tariq Ramadan writes:

“In the presence of God, nothing could justify discrimination, social injustice, or racism. IN the Muslim community, a Black Man called the believers to prayer, and a slave’s son commanded the army; faith had freed the believers from judgments based on deceptive appearance linked to origins and social status that simulate unwise passions and dehumanize them.” [2]

Thus, Muhammad did not choose positions based upon social status or race but rather on merit, meaning that he confronted racism on a structural level.  This should not be surprising as Muhammad was raised by a black woman!  His biological father and mother died at an early age, and his mother entrusted his care to a black woman named Barakah or Umm Ayman.

Concerning Umm Ayman, ‘A Notable Muslim African Woman’ the author writes:

If you’re looking for an important Muslim African woman to talk about during Black History month, look no further than the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) , and the woman he described as his “mother after my own mother. She is the rest of my family.”Barakah or Umm Ayman was the name of the woman whom the noble Prophet esteemed so highly. She was the first person to hold him in her arms when he was born and the only person who knew him from that point until his death. She was one of the few Muslims who the Prophet assured of a place in Paradise.[3]

She is likely one of the reasons Muhammad did not develop the tribalism or skin-color prejudice that many Arab tribes had.  Muhammad spoke very glowingly of Umm Ayman, considering her to be a mother-figure in his life. Thus we can say, God’s last Prophet was raised, fed, and taken care of by a black woman! Muhammad did not put a sword to his mother but she believed Muhammad to be a Prophet of God on the basis of his good character, honesty and other valuable  attributes.

Another early black follower to Islam was Wahashil,  a slave of Ethiopian descent owned by Pagan Arabs. He was told by the Arab pagans that if he killed Muhammad or someone close to Muhammad, he would be granted his freedom.  He would eventually kill the uncle of Muhammad, and afterwards, the Pagan Arabs would then sever parts of the uncle’s body .

Muhammad and his uncle were very close and loved one another. Muhammad was deeply upset and sad when he saw his uncle’s decapitated  body.

Wahashil was granted his freedom by the Pagan Arabs for killing Muhammad’s uncle, and he always desired to convert to Islam, despite his murder of an important Muslim.  Wahashil  then heard  that Muhammad often taught forgiveness,  and he went to have a dialogue with Muhammad. He confessed that he was the one who killed Muhammad’s uncle. Yet, Muhammad willingly decided to forgive this man and accepted his conversion.

Wahashil, so moved by Muhammad’s treatment, would eventually join the Muslim army and would redeem himself when he killed Musaymiliyah,  a man who claimed to be a Prophet also, but who was-only a protector of the Arabian Status quo whose alleged revelations from God were only a support for the injustices of the Pagan Elites.  He was persecuting and torturing many Muslims until he was killed by Wahashil. [4]

Also, there is a specific incident of Muhammad confronting racist attitudes.  While at a meeting, an Arab Muslim companion called Bilal, “The Son of a Black Woman”  which was suppose to be degrading. Muhammad admonished him saying he still has  jahiliyyah in him and told the man that he himself was equally the son of a Black woman referring to Umm Ayman who breastfed him.  The Arab man who made the racist remarks was than bowed on his knees begging for Bilal’s forgiveness.[5]

Thus, history documents both that the early black followers of Muhammad were not forced into conversion by means of the sword but instead willingly converted and that Islam was the first ideology in human history to confront an anti-black society.

Islam and the Empowerment of Women, Especially Black Women

“For me it is enough that Muhammad is the greatest feminist the world has so far had but has so little come to know of… Personally I am infinitely grateful to Muhammad, who has not only empathized with the crying voice of the despairing and exploited woman but has taken momentous measures blustering all opposition, to alleviate her lot and strengthen her in realistic terms.– Anita Rai    [6]

Muhammad, found himself in a 7th century patriarchal Arabian society that mistreated women. Female infanticide was common, rape went unpunished, and women lacked property rights.

Muhammad was deeply troubled by this. He did not publish academic works criticizing the “patriarchy of Meccan Society”, as he could neither read or write Instead he would eventually overthrow the society responsible for this tyranny and become the first person in Arab history to secure property rights for women and to outlaw female infanticide.

This is in contrast to early western feminist who mostly sought certain rights with the confides of a structurally misogynistic society. Muhammad actually overturned the patriarchal society of his day.

Additionally, many early white feminists held racist views and excluded black women.

This gave rise to ‘Black Feminism” which stressed an intersectional  approach between race, class, and gender . Yet, this intersectional approach was done over 1400 years earlier by Muhammad, who systemically confronted racism, poverty, and sexism in Meccan society.  Muhammad not only fought for the emancipation of women but also for freedom for slaves as he confronted the racism and tribalism of early Meccan society.

Islam Legacy of empowering movement would eventually influence Nigeria. Nana Asma’u,[7] a black Muslim woman who authored over 60 surviving books rose to power in West Africa

She not only spoke and wrote in Arabic, Fula, Hausa and Tamacheg Tuareg but many scholars have noted she was able to write in each language prolifically.

Her biggest accomplishment was that she oversaw the educational system for women, and her main body of work emphasizes leadership positions for women and womens’ rights, based upon the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad who said, “Seeking Knowledge is an obligation for every Muslim- male and female.”

In addition to overseeing the education system for women, she also headed an educational system aimed at the poor.

She would also advise her  older brother who would eventually assume a position of leadership in the Caliphate and would partake in debate with other political leaders about political affairs of her nation. Her story is a direct contradiction to the modern narrative of women being oppressed under Islam.

While many feminists have attempted to co-opt her legacy  and hold her up as an example of an early feminist, such ideologies were not around during Nana Asmau’s time, and she was influenced by one thing— Islam.

Islam: The First Intersectional Approach IN History

The Qu’ran  is a book that is critiques economic inequality, greed, and oppression using the example of past societies . Its message was a direct threat to the Pagan-Ruled Meccan Society.  Pre-Muhammad, Meccan society was characterized by a huge rich and poor gap, slavery and mistreatment of women.

Islam came and encouraged the feeding of the poor  and the freeing of the slavery. Muhammad protested  Female Infanticide and  taught respect for women. As Islam spread, Meccans fearful that they would lose money as a result of Muhammad’s teachings first offered him wealth, women and a leadership position in Meccan society, and unlike modern day politicians, Muhammad rejected all of these proposals and still spread his message.  Early Muslims were then persecuted, tortured and killed.

Yet despite all of the backlash, Islam still began to spread among the downtrodden members of society. Eventually, assassination attempts were carried out on Muhammad’s life which caused him to flee from Mecca. The first Muslim community entered Ethiopia, gaining the political protection of Negus, the black emperor.

Thus, the first Muslim community entered Africa as hopeless refugees not conquerors and a black king willingly gave them protection as he sympathized with their cause.  This means that Islam was allowed to flourish in Africa—Ethiopia– before it was accepted in Arabia!Eventually, Muhammad moved to Medina where he would be the head of state and create what’s arguably the first egalitarian society in human history. Every citizen, was giving the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. Muhammad encouraged economic redistribution as an important tenant of Islam.[8]

An Islamic Scholar, Dr Bilal Philips Writes:

Distribution of wealth teaches the believers that they are only temporary custodians of this wealth who must give a portion of it to those who are destitute.

Muhammad lived in a simple tent and gave the money the Muslims’ treasury brought in directly to the poor.

One author writes:   “From  his earliest days he [Muhammad] had a deep sympathy for widows and orphans, the poor and the helpless. He would ever stand by the oppressed. He … [advocated]the rights of women over men, of slaves over their masters, of the ruled over the rulers, and of the subjects over the king. Negro slaves were accorded the same position of honour as the Quraish leaders.” [9]

Righteousness is not turning your faces towards the east or the west. Righteous are those who believe in GOD, the Last Day, the angels, the scripture, and the prophets; and they give the money, cheerfully, to the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the traveling alien, the beggars, and to free the slaves.– Qur’an [2:177]

As the Medina state began to prosper, the Pagan Arabs began to organize an army to invade the state. Several wars and battles ensued, and eventually the Muslims won, overthrowing the tyrannical Meccan society.

With regard to slavery,  one author writes:

Despite the Arab-dominated Middle Eastern and Trans-Saharan slave trade in African captives, the religion of Islam is the only mainstream faith to actively emancipate enslaved people as a aspect of religious devotion. “Free the slave” is repeated constantly in the Qur’an … Islam therefore is a revolutionary religion born into a world where slavery was part of the fabric of that society. [10]

Jonathan Brockopp writes: The unique contribution of the Qur’an, then, is to be found in its emphasis on ….. society’s responsibility toward the slave, perhaps the most progressive legislation on slavery in its time. [11]

Muhammad was so successful at confronting poverty that when gold was left out  the respective owners could come back to it with it still being there. And in particular, there was a mosque that had a huge container of gold.  The rich could freely donate gold to the container, and the poor could take out as much gold as they want.  There was no supervision, and no one could see who was putting in gold and who was taking out gold.[12]

Surprisingly, when at the end of the day the Muslims  would check the container,  there was always an abundant amount of gold in the container.

The Islamic Economic Model as practiced by Muhammad  which stresses redistribution of wealth may seem similar to Socialism but of significant note is that while many socialists  stressed an egalitarian society, many  actually turned to be hypocritical and held on to wealth.

Muhammad on the other hand never did this.  He lived in a simple tent.

Can you imagine a President or Prime Minister of modern day society choosing to live in a simple house while also giving the vast majority of their wealth out freely to the poor? This is something unique to Muhammad.

Muhammad is the first figure in human history to explicitly denounce racism.  In his society, he assigned positions based upon merit not social origin.  As stated early, a society based upon tribalism and prejudice was overthrown, and he assigned positions based upon merit not skin-color. So Bilal became the first Muzzien of  Islam while the son of a black slave commanded the Muslim Army.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action… Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves. …  beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone. “ – The Prophet Muhammad

Muhammad confronting religious intolerance and bigotry.

Muhammad adhered meticulously to the charter he forged for Medina, which – grounded as it was in the Quranic injunction, “Let there be no compulsion in religion” (2:256) – is arguably the first mandate for religious tolerance in human history. [Huston Smith] – [13]

“To me my religion and to you, your religion.”– Quran.

When suspicions of an Arab pagan assassination attempt against Muhammad—were made known to him he trusted a righteous Arab Pagan with intelligence reports. Although he was a Pagan Arab, Muhammad was able to see that this man was trustworthy and behaved righteously, and he encouraged Muslims to treat him with respect and tolerance.  This indicates that although Muhammad was persecuted by Pagan Arab, he never homogenized them and recognized that some among them were indeed moral. [14]

As the statesmen of Medina, Muhammad allowed Christian and Jewish tribes to freely worship and secured their rights in the future with this statement:

“Beware! Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their rights, or burdens them with more than they can bear, or takes anything from them against their free will I(Muhammad) will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment.” [15]

Muhammad’s revolution against the racism, religious intolerance,  sexism, and classed-based exploitation of early Meccan Society truly constitutes the first ‘intersectional approach’.

Thus, Islam was the first ideology in history that  led to the abolition of female of infanticide, secured property rights for women, succeeded in  ending  poverty, and  confronted a racialized slavery  not simply at a theoretical level but at a practical one.

Muhammad can clearly be classified as the most socially progressive person in human history. His commitment to women’s rights surpasses that of modern feminists, his devotion to ending poverty surpasses that of socialists, and confrontation of racism surpass that of your most radical ‘black nationalist’.

Did Islam Spread to Africa VIA the Sword?

“He preferred migration to fighting his own people, but when oppression went beyond the pale of tolerance he took up his sword in self-defense. Those who believe religion can be spread by force are fools who neither know the ways of religion nor the ways of the world.” A Sikh journalist in ‘Nawan Hindustan’: Delhi, 17 November 1947.

Islam did not enter west or central Africa via the sword.  Ethiopia was the first location Muslims entered outside of Arabia, and they came as helpless refugees and were given political rights and allowed to prosper in Ethiopia while Muslims in Arabia were persecuted.  The rapid spread of Islam is something even secular historians has described as truly miraculous  and unprecedented  in human history.

There are numerous African Islamic Kingdoms—Mali, with the esteemed Timbuktu university and Songhai.       They were not conquered into accepting Islam:- it spread via trade. For example, the Songhai Empire in West Africa was headed by  Askia Muhammad, originally a non-Muslim he willingly converted and became very devout in his practice.   Eventually, he created elementary schools for children to learn the Qu’ran, established a banking and credit system and over one hundred schools in his empire. The schools offered degrees in  theology, traditions, grammar, rhetoric, logic, astrology, astronomy, history, geography, medicine, science, and math.

In the tradition of the Prophet, he gave freely to the poor and was truly loved by his people. An medieval Sudanese source writes about:

“One cannot find his like among those who preceded him nor among those who came after him. He had a lively affection for the doctor, holy persons, and students. He gave much alm and undertook special religious devotions. Full of respect for the doctors, he distributed wealth to them generously to assure the interest of the Muslims and to help them in their submission to God …. He caused all the bloody cruelties, iniquities, …. to disappear. He established religion (Islam) on the most solid base. [16]

In addition to Songhai, there was also the Mali Kingdom.  This kingdoms governmental structure resembled many modern day kingdoms with a master of treasury, Master of commerce, Etiquette of Protocol sanitation commissioner, and master of foreign affairs.[17] It was also home to an esteemed Islamic centered educational system which gave rise to one of West Africa’s greatest scholars Ahmad Baba al Massufil, a teacher, philosopher, and Arabic grammarian who wrote over 40 books.

Concerning some of these manuscripts, Michael Palin writes that the Kingdom of Mali

has a collection of scientific texts that clearly show the planets circling the sun. They date back hundreds of years . . . Its convincing evidence that the scholars of Timbuktu knew a lot more than their counterparts in Europe. In the fifteenth century in Timbuktu the mathematicians knew about the rotation of the planets, knew about the details of the eclipse, they knew things which we had to wait for 150 almost 200 years to know in Europe when Galileo and Copernicus came up with these same calculations and were given a very hard time for it.” [18]

While European scientist were nearly persecuted and killed for suggesting the Earth wasn’t the center of the universe, despite the religious nature of Timbuktu , scientific inequity was freely encouraged among Black Muslims.

Black people in West Africa were not only willingly converts to Islam but were also extremely devout in their religion. None of the people of West or Central Africa where Islam flourished among Blacks were forced into it by Arab Imperialists. In North Africa, Muslims did indeed conquer Egypt.  However, Egypt at the time was under the control of the Non-African Roman population.  Indonesia is the largest  Muslim country in the world and none of its inhabits ever saw a single sword or forced into conversions.

“Godless and Black” also misunderstands the nature of the Muslim Army which was never comprised exclusively of Arabs. Since its inception, Black people played an integral part of this army and his blatant denial of it is yet another example of the erasure of black history.

For example, Spain was conquered by Black Muslims known as the Moors who ruled Spain for over 700 years.  Much of early Greek and Roman literature was preserved due to Muslims who translated their works into Arabic. Some historians believe their presence lead to the Scientific Revolution and the Renaissance. Dean Derhak writes:

When you think of European culture, one of the first things that comes to mind is the renaissance. Many of the roots of European culture can be traced back to that glorious time of art, science, commerce and architecture. But, long before the renaissance there was a place of humanistic beauty in Muslim Spain. Not only was it artistic, scientific and commercial but also tolerant and poetic. Moors, as the Spaniards call the Muslims, populated Spain for nearly 700 years. .. was their civilization that brought Europe out of the dark ages and ushered in the renaissance. [19]

Also, Muslims in Spain lived peacefully with Jews and Christian—it was one of the first religiously tolerant societies—so while Muslims certainly carried out conquests – forced  conversion were never carried out due to the Quranic verse,”There is no Compulsion in religion. Truth has been made clear from Falsehood.”

Concerning the spread of Islam,  Mahandas Ghandi Writes:

“ it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the second volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of that great life.”  [20]

The Beauty of Islam

From its earliest days, black people played a vital role in the spread of Islam. A black woman raised the Prophet from his childhood and years after the Prophet’s death Islam would spread into West Africa not through conquest but through trade and Black People were at their highest when-following the religion of Islam evidenced by the Mali Empire,  Timbuktu, and Songahi. Black Women in the Sokoto Islamic Empire were scholars and professors and played a vital role in the political landscape of the nation when women in the western world were barred from attending educations.

Today, the influence that Islam has had on African-Americans is profound. Malcolm  X, is a cultural icon and Rap Music, an African-American invention, has been significantly influenced by Islam. Nas,    (Rapper of Illmatic which is widely regarded to be the greatest Album in Hip-Hop history) is named after a Surah of the Qu’ran. Rakim, who is considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, is a Muslim, and Islamic themes pervade his music.   Common slang terms utilized by African-Americans such as ending conversation with “Peace” are Islamic in origin. Many of the slaves taken to America were Muslim such as  Bilalil Muhammad who partook in the American revolution against the British Empire and wrote Islamic Law Documents, and Omar Ibn Said  who was asked to write the “Lord’s Prayer” in a newspaper in Arabic. Years later, we would find that what he actually wrote was Al-Fatima—the opening of the Qu’ran.

Islam flourishes and  is an important part of African Culture and in the diaspora. While Anti-Black violence and beliefs pervade the Arab Muslim world today, fighting it requires a return to the true principles of Islam. Just as in the early days of Islam, the Prophet encouraged “freedom for the slave” and would militarily confront an oppressive Meccan society- the Muslim Ummah must confront racism and destroy every vestige of it. To do so requires returning to the Hadiths, which explicitly condemn racism.   I leave you with this quote:

“His readiness to undergo persecutions for his beliefs, the high moral character of the men who believed in him and looked up to him as leader, and the greatness of his ultimate achievement – all argue his fundamental integrity. To suppose Muhammad an impostor raises more problems than it solves. Moreover, none of the great figures of history is so poorly appreciated in the West as Muhammad.  Professor William Montgomery Watt

Islam, Religion, and Patriarchy (Responses to Critics)

Patriarchy: a social system in which the male is the primary authority figure central to social organization and where fathers hold authority over women and children.  [1]

A man came to the Prophet  Muhammad (pbuh) and asked him, “Who has the  greatest right over me after God?” The Prophet replied, “Your mother.” The man then asked, “Who after that?” to which the Prophet replied again, “Your mother.” Asked who is next, the Prophet again replied, “Your mother.” When the man asked who after that, the Prophet said, “Your father.”

“They say[Arab Pagans]: “We shall follow the ways of our fathers.” What! Even though your fathers were void of wisdom and guidance?” – The Qu’ran.

Islam, Patriarchy, Women’s Rights.

From inspiredbymuhammad.com

The religion of Islam, when first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, secured social rights for women and eliminated violent barbaric rituals practiced against women.  It was Islam that was the first ideology to introduce university education to women in West Africa hundreds of years prior to the ‘enlightened’ secular west.In my previous article, “Open Challenge to Femen and Western Feminist Critics of Islam,” I demonstrated how the Prophet Muhammad reformed society and established basic rights for women, which they would not obtain in the secular ‘progressive’ world until centuries later. Noah Feldman writes:

  • “When the British applied their law to Muslims in place of shariah, as they did in some colonies, the result was to strip married women of the property that Islamic law had always granted them – hardly progress toward equality of the sexes.” [2]

I challenged Feminist Critics of Islam to name a single historical figure who revamped a society to totally dismantle patriarchal practices in a manner rivaling Muammad of Arabia. No one has yet even attempted to meet the challenge, but some have attempted to critique the article. I was looking to engage in a real dialogue with secular feminists regarding Islam and women’s rights, yet all of the responses to the article simply repeated outdated clichés that demonstrated they had very little knowledge about Islam.

Challenge One

               One critic writes:

“Huh. This troubles me to no end..  If you read the bible, the Qur’an (I have one, I read some of it, as I have a very Muslim friend) you’ll see religion is intrinsically sexist. …, women are relegated to 2nd class citizens.. So, no, I’ll never say any mainstream religion will ever be beneficial to women’s rights as they have only proven, time and time again, to hinder progress in this area (and many others)”

I’m well-read in the theories of feminism. I have a female friend who once had a bell hooks book—I read some of it. The previous statement gives the equivalent level of scholarly inquiry of this user.

To fully understand the Qu’ran, one should also look at the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad to see the impact that the revelation of the Qu’ran had on the women of Arabia.

The Qu’ran ended female infanticide and secured property, divorce, and marriage rights for women. In fact, one of the reasons Islam spread so rapidly is because of the women in Arabia: they converted in mass numbers because it elevated their social status and gave them justice:

“……..the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so – for them God has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.”  —-The Qu’ran

Far from being a “tool of patriarchal oppression,” the Qu’ran quite simply is a book that is a critique of tyranny and oppression. It mentions various societies throughout history and criticizes them for injustices, such as economic inequality, female infanticide, failing to free slaves, etc. As the non-Muslim, female, religious scholar Karen Armstrong writes:

“The Qu’ran is nothing more than a cry for compassion. The bedrock message of the Qu’ran is that it’s wrong to build up a private fortune and not share wealth equally.” [3]

Challenge #2

Another user responded,
“Like one example, women in Saudi Arabia aren’t allowed to drive, must have a male guardian and can’t hold high office positions.”

Legislation in Saudi Arabia outlawing women from driving is a tribal/cultural practice that has nothing to do with Islam. Sabria Jawhar writes:

“The driving ban…..is absurd and has no basis in Islam…If all women were given the rights the Qur’an guarantees us, and not be supplanted by tribal customs, then the issue of whether Saudi women have equal rights would be reduced.” [4]

Women in Saudi Arabia are barred from obtaining political positions or even voting. Yet, in early Islamic history, a woman named Sitt al-Mulk became a Calipha (head of the Islamic State).[5] Saudia Arabia may posture as though they are an Islamic country, but they actually have a monarchy, which is a forbidden governmental system according to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

"/

Women, a warning. Leave not your homes without good reason. You may go out to get food or to seek education. In Islam, it is a religious duty to seek knowledge Women may leave their homes freely for this.
—A Warning, II¸Nana Asma’u, 185

Nana Asma’u, a black Muslim woman of Nigeria, oversaw universities dedicated to education women[6]. Fatima al-Fihri, another Muslim woman of Northern Africa, headed the first university that issued degrees in certain majors[7]. Eventually, the west would pick up on this practice—moreover, the Arabic numeral system of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9 was exported to Europe and the west from this Female headed Muslim
The next critique of my article came from a ‘scholar’ named Vincent Bruno Otero who has his religious views considers himself to be a member of the Infidel Liberation Front. Here is a picture of him:

Challenge #3 Claim #1

“First, let’s tackle the idea that women were not allowed to inherit property in Pre-Islamic Arabia. Muhammad’s first wife and the very first convert to Islam was Khadija. Khadija’s father, Khuwaylid ibn Asad, had been a successful merchant and businessman, and after his death in 585 AD, his wealth and business were inherited by Khadija who successfully managed and preserved this fortune. So this begs the question, how did this Pre-Islamic Arab women, the eventual “Mother of Islam”, inherit and operate such a successful trading business? It is because women could and did inherit property and held the social power necessary to maintain their wealth.”

Let’s tackle the idea that black women did not have equal access to education and opportunities for social advancement to white men in Jim Crow America. Madam C.J. Walker, an African-American business woman, became a millionaire during the so-called racially oppressive Jim-Crow era. So this begs the question, how did Madam C.J Walker, who was renowned for her wealth and money, operate such a profitable business? It is because black women could, and did, inherit property and hold the social power necessary to maintain their wealth.

The logic of Vincent is truly juvenile and simplistic. Khadijah’s was an extremely bright and steadfast woman who was able to overcome patriarchal norms in pre-Islamic Arabia. Her wealth was not self-made, but something she obtained to her father. Her specific situation and social status is certainly atypical for women in all of Arabia, nor does it prove that all women in pre-Islamic Arabia had rights. Even non-Muslim scholars who believe that some of Islam retains patriarchal aspects ultimately acknowledge Muhammad’s commitment to women’s rights and the terrible condition of women before Islam.

> William Montgomery Watt states:
“It is true that Islam is still, in many ways, a man’s religion. But I think I’ve found evidence in some of the early sources that seems to show that Muhammad made things better for women. …. At the time Islam began, the conditions of women were terrible – they had no right to own property, were supposed to be the property of the man, and if the man died everything went to his sons. Muhammad improved things quite a lot. By instituting rights of property ownership, inheritance, education and divorce, he gave women certain basic safeguards. Set in such historical context the Prophet can be seen as a figure who testified on behalf of women’s rights.” [8]

Challenge, #3 Claim #2

“The claim that somehow all Pagan Arab people were burying their female infants alive is obviously a mass generalization ……Paganism has no creed or doctrine, no founder, no central holy books, no dogmas. Paganism is a term used to describe the millions of indigenous belief systems which exist outside of Abrahamism. …… Similar claims were made about Native Americans when Christians were trying to legitimize their conquest of North America. Yes, some Native American tribes did partake in barbaric practices such as human sacrifice, but these barbaric practices were not pandemic to all or even most of the Native tribes.”

Vincent is correct on his point that what is termed “pagan” by historians has no universal creed. I use the term “Arab Pagan” to describe the religious and spiritual beliefs of Arabs prior to the revelation of Islam. because of a lack of a better word. Obviously, not every single Arab man in Arabia buried their daughters, but the practice of female infanticide was wide-spread throughout  Arabia at the time.

Arabia ’pagans’ had proverbs which includes “The dispatch of daughters is a kindness,” and “The burial of daughters is a noble deed.” Sons were valued over daughters in pre-Islamic Arabia and were killed at birth. [9]It is so ironic that members of the so-called “progressive” community come to the defense of Arab Pagans who partook in such abhorrent patriarchal practices all because of their hatred of Islam.

As for Vincent’s absurd attempt to compare Muhammad to the Spanish conquistadors – who merely used female infanticide as a tactic to rationalize conquering Arab Pagans – it truly demonstrates his lack of knowledge on Islamic history. When Muhammad first began teaching Islam, he was offered the most beautiful of women, a position of leadership in Mecca, and riches; he rejected all of these things. All historical records indicate that Muhammad’s revolution in Mecca was for the people, and the Arab Pagans were the oppressors of their day from female infanticide to slavery to economic inequality — Muhammad came championing the rights for the women, slaves, and poor.

Challenge, #3, Claim 3

Vincent goes on to say, “’Women in Pre-Islamic Arabia: Nabataea‘ (2007), renowned women Saudi Scholar and Archeologist Hatoon Ajwad al-Fassi questions the assumption of subordination of women in pre-Islamic Arabia.”

Once again, Vincent is merely copy and pasting from Geocities websites and has not read his source material. Hatoon Ajwad Al-Fassi concludes that many oppressive patriarchal”… practices related to women’s status are based on some local traditional practices that are not necessarily Islamic.”
She finds evidence of one isolated ethnic group in the Before Christ era in Northern Arabia that had rights for women and argues that these rights were destroyed under Roman colonization. The evidence that Muhammad was born into a patriarchal misogynistic society is certainly not refuted from his copy and paste book review. Rather, the author believes that misogynistic practices of Arabs during the time of Muhammad were a result of Roman colonization and were not indigenous.[10]

Challenge 3, Claim 4

These next arguments of Vincent’s are copy and pasted drivel from anti-Islamic sources. Since most of the arguments are copy and pasted nonsense of no credibility, I will only address some of the claims.

Quran 2:223 describes women as “tilth” or plowed earth to be approached when and how a man pleases,”

This verse is merely describing how children are born between a husband and his wife.  There was a myth going around Arabia that if a man had sex with a woman in a certain kind of way the baby would be born cross-eyed[11]. This verse came to correct such misguidance. It’s unclear what exactly is patriarchal about this— and it certainly is not advocating rape as intimated by Vincent.

“Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves. And fear Allah and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.” – Quran 2:233

Elsewhere in the Qu’ran:

Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, … on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. “

Challenge 3, Claim 5

“Quran 4:11 (see also verse 4:176) makes it clear that women should inherit half that of men.”

Here is what the Qu’ran says:

Unto the men belongeth a share of that which parents and near kindred leave, and unto the women a share of that which parents and near kindred leave,”– The Qu’ran

“unto men a fortune from that which they have earned, and unto women a fortune from that which they have earned”‘ — The Qu’ran.

Let’s think about what this means. These verses were released over 1400 years ago, and in America, women today still do not earn equal pay for equal work.  Such practices would be forbidden according to Islam. Women in the cecular “progressive” west often did not even have basic property rights. The Prophet Muhammad also said, “Low I suffer not the work of any worker, male or female, to be lost.”

The Holy Qur’an (4:11) indicates that in the event of a  offspring’s death, the parents each receive an equal share. B

Additionally, Islamic inheritance is incredibly complex and is based upon lineage.  The more closely related you are to the person, the more inheritance you get. Every paycheck a man brings home must go towards providing for his wife, children, etc. Even after a divorce, men must still provide for his wife and children. However, a woman or wife who brings home a paycheck is not under such obligation to do so. In Islam, the Misunderstood Religion, the author writes:

“on the whole woman  gets one-third of the inherited property to spend it on her person, whereas man is given two-thirds of it to discharge his financial obligations in the first place, towards his wife,  and secondly his family and children. As such, speaking in terms of simple mathematics to whom does the larger portion go? “ [12]

One could actually argue that the male who has an obligation to spend his money on his wife and children constitutes an injustice to men.

The truth is Islam’s message of financial responsibility for fathers would benefit many inner-city communities—in which the fathers are absentee, not paying child support, or spousal support; as a result, single parents are struggling to provide for their children.

Under Islam, if the father isn’t working or is unemployed, money from the government through Zakat will be utilized to provide food, clothing, and shelter for the family. This helps financially struggling families—America has no such system and, as a result, many children of single parent households turn to the drug trade for money and gangs as their extended family in search of their desire for a father figure.

  Challenge, 3, Claim 6

“Quran 4:3 gives men provisions to have up to four wives but does not allow women to have up to four husbands;”

Prior to Islam  in Arabia,  Polygyny went completely unregulated and some men would have up to fifty wives. Islam came to put a restriction of polygyny. The Qu’ran states:“Marry women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with them, then only one.” Thus, men are allowed to have up to four wives if they are able to do justice to all of them. If they aren’t, then only one is allowed. If you go to any given Mosque, most Muslim men will have only wife.In the name of fairness and equality, many people often ask, “why can men have multiple wives but women can’t have multiple husbands?”The answer is quite obvious: if a man has multiple wives, every child will know who their mother is and every mother will know who her child is.

However, if a wife has multiple husbands, there is no telling who the father is. Is it acceptable to tell a child, “Baby, any one of these four men can be your daddy”?  Should they then go on the Maury show to see who the baby daddy of each child is? Is this what the Muslim critics are now promoting?Additionally, men being allowed to have multiple wives make perfect sense on a societal level. During times of war, many women’s husband died and there was a disproportionate number of women to men. To provide and care for them—men were allowed to marry more than one wife.

The amount of women outnumber men on earth, and restricting marriage to one husband would lead to many women to not marry. Dr Zanik indicates:

“Even if every man got married to one woman, there would still be more than thirty million more females in USA who would not be able to get husbands (considering that America has twenty five million gays). There would be more than four million females in Great Britain 5 million females in Germany and nine million females in Russia alone who would not be able to find a husband.” [13]

Polyandry, women having multiple husbands would increase this problem not solve it.

Challenge 3, Claim 7

“…then of course there are the many allowances in the Quran for taking women captive and keeping them as sex slaves, such as Quran 33:50, 23:5-6, and Quran 4:24.”  - Vincent

There is absolutely no such thing as “sex slaves” in Islam, and this is a clear indication of Vincent’s academic dishonesty.

“None  of you should say: this is my slave and this is my slave-girl.” – The Prophet Muhammad

Wars were never waged by the Prophet Muhammad for the purposes of taking women captive, rather, they were against tyranny and oppression of the Pagan Arab elites. In these wars, many people, both Muslim and Pagan Meccan, died leaving women to be widows. When the Muslims won the war and pagans were conquered, captives were indeed taken, as are in most wars of the era.

As a strategy to reintegrate these widowed women into society (whose society was harmed from these battles and wars), Muslim men were encouraged and permitted to marry them. Upon marriage, these women would be freed as captives and the child of the couple would also be free.

Concerning these captives, it was permitted for Muslim men to marry them.

“…provided that you seek them in marriage with gifts from your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. So for whatever you enjoy of marriage from them, give them their due compensation as an obligation.”   Quran 4:24.

So, his narrative of Muslim men taking women as sex slaves after wars is clearly false. Rape is unlawful sexual intercourse and so is acting upon lust according to the Qu’ran, so such behavior simply isn’t permitted. The same cannot be said for Pagan Celtics or Vikings who viewed rape as sport and after wars freely raped women.

Contrasting the Islamic strategy of marriage to reintegrate war captives into society with Europe, one author writes:

“The women captured in wars were among other nations forced to lead a shameful and vile life of prostitution, for they had none to take care of or look after them and as their masters’ sense of honor was seldom injured by their pursuing such  a wicked course of life.” [14]

So, women in Europe’s war often resorted to position them in a way that was degrading, leaving them on the margins of the societal hierarchy. Meanwhile, Islam sought to reintegrate them into society.

—————————————————————————————————–

Conclusion

Islam as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad began as a movement to liberate women from the tyranny of Pagan Meccan society. Since its inception it has been a force that contributes greatly to securing the freedom of women. Secularist ideologies promoted by Femen on the other hands only contributes  racist and orientalist discourse. Where sexism exist in the Middle East its the result of tribal, cultural, and non-Islamic practices.

Illmatic Victory Part One

illmaticvictoryy

Ever since his recent discovery was featured on the Paul Robeson channel a few months ago, Professor Shabazz’s archeology class experienced a spike in enrollment.

“This prosperous Black Nationalist state that we all live in now hasn’t always been like this,” the professor told his archeology class of 25 students. “You see, there was a period of time where Ancient America faced a variety of social problems: slavery, segregation, racism, workplace discrimination, drug problems and gang violence.”

His students listened intently, well aware of Professor Shabazz’s stellar reputation as a historian; he would be taking this to an enlightening level.

“You see,” continued Professor Shabazz, “about 3,000 years ago, there was a great battle on the black community. There were black-on-black crimes, and drugs plagued the community. Perhaps even worse is the fact that gangs flourished throughout the neighborhoods.”

Black History Month was one of the most important of the ancient celebrations. The University of Marcus Garvey took this event a step further, and with the famed Professor Shabazz teaching at the school, the best of times in Carmichaelville were soon to be.

“Today, we’re going to talk about one of the most prominent figures of Ancient America; this man inspired the development of Carmichaelville and this great state that we have now.”

Professor Shabazz unveiled a picture of the 21st century hip-hop musician, Nas.                 “In fact, if this man hadn’t brought the conditions of the streets into the limelight,” said the professor, “the social revolution of that century would not have happened and our new society would still be only a utopian dream. This man is one of the greatest musicians of all time: Nas.”

The college students listened with great interest. Nas had been heralded as one of the greatest black musicians of all time, given the same level of admiration that Shakespeare and Aesop received in the ancient civilization of America.

Nas was part of the reason why the Republic of New Afrika had become such a great place for African Americans to improve their lives. His lyrics about ancient Carmichaelville, formerly named Queensbridge, helped archeologists discover more about the past.

Pointing outside the school to the luxurious apartments just a few blocks away from the subway, the professor told his class, “Those buildings right there were the subject of the musical masterpieces of Nas’ lyrics. His songs were about violence, poverty, and gangs. It’s the awareness of these issues that inspired the black revolution, creating the beautiful society that we are blessed to live in today.”

Professor Shabazz turned on the digital display to show some of the lyrics from the 1994 Nas album, Illmatic.

“Now let me take a trip down memory lane

Comin’ outta Queensbridge

One for the money, two for pussy and foreign cars

Three for Alize niggaz deceased or behind bars

I rap divine Gods check the prognosis, is it real or showbiz?

My window faces shootouts, drug overdoses

Live amongst no roses, only the drama, for real

A nickel-plate is my fate, my medicine is the ganja

Here’s my basis, my razor embraces, many faces

Your telephone blowin’, black stitches or fat shoelaces”

Professor Shabazz started to unlatch his briefcase. Could this possibly be the famed artifact that had been featured on the Paul Robeson channel on national TV? But before he could open his briefcase fully, a student sitting in the front row interrupted him.

“Excuse me, Professor,” said the student. “I have a question that I’m sure the entire class will find interesting.”

What Republicans Can Learn From the Life of the Prophet Muhammad

None of the great figures of history is so poorly appreciated in the West as Muhammad.”

                                                                                                                 —W. Montgomery Watt

The Prophet Muhammad truly embodied the highest levels of integrity and self-discipline ever found in humanity. It would be difficult to imagine what state the world would be in without his influential life, in which his belief in God and in human rights was key; surely, the world would be far more chaotic and lost than it currently is. Although he was a notable historical figure, his life is often taken for granted in these modern days. American politicians—both liberal and republican—could benefit greatly from learning about the life of Muhammad and apply those principles in their political careers.

Professor K. S. Ramakrishna Rao has been quoted as saying: “The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it.

What Republicans Can Learn From the Life of the Prophet Muhammad

1) The Ethics of War.

Like George W. Bush and President Obama, the Prophet Muhammad was head of a state. His political career differed, however, as being one of peace. Muhammad professed ethics that included charitable acts for the poor, granting freedom for slaves, giving women rights, and becoming one with God. This stance on human rights and spirituality was scorned by many, and Muhammad and his followers were persecuted. Multiple assassination attempts endangered Muhammad’s life, and he was tortured and stoned.

Eventually, Muhammad and his followers moved to Medina, where he helped to create an economically egalitarian society. When the Meccans declared war on this new society, Muhammad did much more than any modern-day political leader would do: he fought as a soldier in each of the wars that the Early Medinian society faced. His vigilance and bravery during battle did not go unnoticed, and his comrades knew him as a man who put his words into action. Even when thousands of arrows were coming his way and the Muslim army retreated, nearly accepting defeat, Muhammad continued to march forward against his enemies, inspiring his troops enough to lead them to victory.

In sharp contrast, modern-day wars in the United States are becoming increasingly impersonal. Leaders no longer become physically involved in the wars they engage in. This only heightens the distance with which such leaders view their enemies. The U.S. President can easily remain in the White House throughout years of warfare, living a life of luxury and never seeing a single skirmish first-hand. No longer do political leaders in the U.S. consider whether a war is just or unjust; the profits that accumulate as a result of warfare are tempting enough to give them the necessary incentive. No longer is it a fight against injustice or for the necessity of a country’s self-defense; wars are now fought with money in mind and in the hopes of boosting favor in allied or neutral countries.

Nawan writes of Muhammad: “He preferred migration to fighting his own people, but when oppression went beyond the pale of tolerance he took up his sword in self-defense. Those who believe religion can be spread by force are fools who neither know the ways of religion nor the ways of the world.”

This quote exemplifies the Prophet Muhammad’s views on warfare, which are quite different from the views held by political leaders in the 21st century. Perhaps if politicians were required to physically participate in the wars they wanted to wage, fighting alongside the nation’s soldiers, they would be inclined to critically examine whether war was truly a necessity. Republicans in the White House have supported unjust, profit-based wars, with the most current example being that of former President George W. Bush, who accused Iraq of having weapons of mass destruction.

These weapons were never discovered. Some people believe the weapons of mass destruction never existed, and that the war in Iraq was based on a lie. Ultimately, the war was unnecessary; it was waged purely to secure American geopolitical interests and expand U.S. hegemony.

Another difference between the Prophet Muhammad and the political leaders of today are Muhammad’s ethics and principles concerning war, which the U.S. violates during wartime. These are some of the statements Muhammad has made that reveal his ethical stance: “God’s messenger forbids killing children, women, and slaves. Do not kill women, children, and old people. Do not commit treacherous actions. Do not stray from the right path. Never mutilate.”

Not only can republicans learn from Muhammad’s compassion and mercy, but U.S. soldiers can, too. By becoming a more peaceful society, wars can America can reach new levels of social progress.

2) Women’s Rights.

Muhammad was born into a society that degraded women and treated them in a cruel, sadistic manner with no thought of gender equality. Women were not granted basic divorce, marriage, or property rights. Certain customs were extremely misogynistic. For example, if a woman’s husband died, she was forced to marry the son that her husband had had in another marriage; however, if the son did not want her, it was customary for the woman to be forced into a hut in the desert, left to fend for herself. It was only until a year had passed that she would be allowed to enter society once more; additionally, she was forced to complete a ritual in which camel excrement was splattered on her body, or she would not be allowed to return.

Women were so terribly abused in that society that rape was not even considered a punishable crime. They were viewed by pre-Islamic Arabian society as nothing more than mere objects for the sexual pleasure of men. The violence against women did not end there. Having a daughter was considered so shameful that the newborn would be killed by being buried alive in sand.

Muhammad saw these atrocities and knew he had to do something to change the society in which he lived. He led a revolution against these injustices, ending female infanticide. Additionally, he secured property and divorce/marriage rights for women, giving them the first taste of equality that they had had in Arabian history. In his final speech, he encouraged men to “treat women well”—prior to his ascension, women had been subject to violence on a daily basis, living their lives in fear. Muhammad’s progressive ideas regarding women’s rights came into fruition over 1,400 years ago; he was well ahead of his time.

Sadly, even in the year 2013, women are still not given the respect and equal rights that they inherently deserve. Many modern-day republicans are astonishingly backwards in regards to the treatment of women.

During his political campaign for president, republican Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, informed the public of his stance against making birth control pills available, and has been quoted as saying, “Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that.” Had Romney been elected, women’s rights regarding healthcare would have seen a sharp decline. Although, Planned Parenthood has racist eugenic origins this was not the basis of Mitt Romney’s opposition.  Eliminating Planned Parenthood—which is a program that also provides breast cancer screenings, contraceptives, and STD tests, among other things, all at an affordable price—wouldn’t only cut off lower-income women’s healthcare. It would also make it clear that society no longer valued and respected women as much as before, and potentially encourage precisely the kind of misogyny that breeds sexism and discrimination in virtually every aspect of life.

While trying to curry favor with those in the U.S. who are strongly supportive of women’s rights, Romney backtracked during the second presidential debate, when he stated: “I’d just note that I don’t believe that bureaucrats in Washington should tell someone whether they can use contraceptives or not, and I don’t believe employers should tell someone whether they could have contraceptive care or not. Every woman in America should have total access to contraceptives. And the President’s statement of my policy is completely and totally wrong.”

Politicians occasionally slip and say something they didn’t intend, perhaps by poorly phrasing their ideas or in simple error. However, republicans such as Romney have a tendency to “flip-flop” their political views, wanting to please whichever crowd is listening to them speak, and carelessly allowing their integrity become marred from their intentional lies and misleading language. These republicans are more than willing to sell their integrity for the price of potentially winning an election. In contrast, Muhammad’s ethical code was one of integrity, justice, and human rights.

“…… be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives……whether one is rich or poor.” Surat An Nisa 4: 135

It isn’t just Mitt Romney who has been outspoken against women’s rights. Jesse Peterson, a republican commenter who frequently appears on Fox News, has stated that America’s biggest mistake was giving women the right to vote.

Women who are denied the right to vote, denied the right to proper healthcare, or who suffer from any other form of gender-based discrimination, are clearly not receiving the kind of egalitarian treatment that the Prophet Muhammad championed. Muhammad welcomed women into the political affairs of his society, treating them as equals. As Tariq Ramadan writes: “There was always gentleness and dignity in his behavior toward women, whom he listened to, and whose right to express themselves and set forth their opinions and arguments he acknowledged, protected, and promoted.”

While not all republicans embrace the views of Jesse Peterson or Mitt Romney, the republican track record of discouraging and setting back women’s rights is downright disgraceful. An overwhelming number of republicans have opposed the Violence Against Women Act, which provided funding for various grant programs, including violence on college campuses grants, safe havens project, a sexual assault services program, etc. It is shocking that people would, to this day, refuse to believe that women should be treated with the same decency and respect as men.

The Prophet Muhammad has emphasized the phrase in the Qur’an, “Lower your gaze,” which may have been the earliest mandate against sexual harassment in society. Republicans could truly benefit from studying the life of Muhammad, who has been a powerful influence for good both during his lifetime and afterwards as his teachings have been passed on. A safer society, derived from protecting women and their rights, would benefit everyone, lowering crime rates and increasing citizens’ overall happiness.

3) Accessibility, Love for the Poor & Freedom for Slaves.

The Prophet Muhammad greatly contributed to assisting the poor and oppressed people in society. While ruling Medina, he implemented Zakat, which redistributed a percentage of wealth from well-off members of society to those who were struggling financially. This eased the burden of the poor while giving wealthy people the chance to receive the blessings that result from altruism. As another measure to protect the well-being of each individual within society, Muhammad guaranteed each citizen the fulfillment of their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter.

Before Muhammad was born, slavery was as much part of the fabric of Arabian society as it once was in the United States prior to the Civil War. While America would not make all men free until the year 1865, Muhammad was an advocate for civil rights around 600 CE. Throughout the Qur’an, “free the slave” is repeated multiple times.

Indeed, one author writes: “He would ever stand by the oppressed. He vindicated the rights of women over men, of slaves over their masters, of the ruled over the rulers, and of the subjects over the king. Negro slaves were accorded the same position of honour as the Quraish leaders. He was the champion of the oppressed and the ill-treated ones. He was very fond of children, and while walking along he would pat and stroke those whom he met on the way. Without fail would he visit the sick to enquire after their health and console them. He would also accompany a funeral.”

Today, many republican politicians vilify social policies that are dedicated to helping the poor, calling them “Marxist” and flatly refusing to accept that such policies are vital to providing each human being with dignity and the blessings of compassion. Yet another difference between Muhammad, a statesman in his day, and republicans in modern times is Muhammad’s genuine openness to engaging with the public. Republicans of today are generally inaccessible to the public, keeping to themselves when not campaigning. Muhammad, however, interacted with ordinary citizens on a daily basis, regardless of whether they were slaves, women, or poor people.

His actions were not out of boastfulness or shining up his image for increased political sway, as Paul Ryan’s infamous picture posing at a soup kitchen was (Ryan left the soup kitchen immediately after getting the media attention he had sought); Muhammad’s perception of the poor was not one of negativity. He did not believe poor people were struggling financially due to laziness or incorrect ethics; he showed true compassion towards them, giving as much as he could to help them out.

One author writes: “He never gave a flat-out refusal to a beggar. He would feed the hungry, himself going without food. He never kept any money in his possession. While on his deathbed, he sent for whatever there was in his house and distributed it among the poor.”

In modern times, politicians still have the chance to follow Muhammad’s example of charity and benevolence. Regardless of the mistakes they may have made in the past, change is always an option. It can be safely assumed that Muhammad would have wanted his life to positively influence those of even politicians who profess quite different views than those he held. Learning to love others and empathize with them would provide politicians with much-needed depth and give them added passion and inspiration in making the world a better place.

Male and Female Relationships in the Hood

tupacandgirlGrowing up in the inner city of Chicago, you often hear teenagers treating women as mere sexual objects, using profoundly ignorant statements such as, “I wouldn’t cuff, but I’d fuck, though,” or, “I wouldn’t wife that bitch, but I’d fuck her.” Sometimes, this behavior is even perpetuated by women themselves.

As I was walking home from school one day, there were some misguided black women, one of whom hollered, “Lawd, he’s sexy as hell,” and said, “He’s cute,” as I walked by. I continued walking, and one of them called me back to talk to them. Although I was completely uninterested, I didn’t want to be rude, so I walked over to them. They flattered me with compliments regarding certain physical features of mine. I gratefully thanked them for the compliments, but then they started to tell me how “freaky” they were. They pointed to their house, told me I was welcome at any time, and gave me their numbers.

At that point, my mood changed. Here were two girls who were offering part of themselves that should only be given to a man within the covenant of marriage. They didn’t even know me well enough to be sure of my character, level of responsibility, or any other attributes that come into play when finding someone suitable to marry.

In the black community, this promiscuity often results in STDs, teenage pregnancies, and out-of-wedlock births. These, in turn, lead to a cycle of generations of people living in impoverishment. Promiscuity obviously isn’t the direct cause of poverty in the black community; however, it does have a disastrous effect on the condition of inner-city communities. Many children grow up not knowing who their biological father is, perhaps knowing it could be any one of several men due to their mother’s promiscuity. Other children do know who their biological father is, but because they were born out of wedlock, their mother’s boyfriend was completely unprepared to take on the responsibilities of fatherhood; often, their father is still in jr. high or high school, with no job and no intention of taking responsibility for their actions.

Having a child should not be the result of an accidental condom breakage during a one-night stand, or the result of not using protection while unmarried; it should be a deliberate, planned event with the couple’s financial and emotional situation taken into account. Before having children, one should know how they plan to raise them, what morals they will teach them, and how they will be able to provide for them, among other factors.

“Vile women for vile men, and vile men for vile women; and virtuous women for virtuous men, and virtuous men for virtuous women.”  -Quran

It is time for brothers to make wiser decisions when it comes to women. The concept of “friends with benefits” is ridiculous. Equally ridiculous is the game that many brothers are playing of wanting to sweet-talk, flirt, and try to get between the legs of every cute female they see. It’s important to get married before being intimate with a woman, and every man should know his vision and goals in life before he gets married.

No man deserves the physical pleasure of intimacy with a woman unless he is willing to take on the responsibilities that come with marriage. He should work on getting in good physical shape, expanding his knowledge, being financially stable, and living a moral life with a focus on God and spirituality. All of these things contribute to becoming a more mature, stable man, readying him for the responsibilities of adulthood.

Now, I know that all brothers fall on hard times, and just because you’re going through a financial struggle, it doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t marry. But your goals must still include financial security so that you can provide for your wife and future children. Put forth the maximum effort in earning and saving money legally, and don’t waste your money on unnecessary luxury items such as a flat screen TV or a pair of fancy Air Jordans. Also, if you’re spending your money on alcohol, marijuana, or any other drugs, then you aren’t ready to marry. A man should be free of addictions before pursuing marriage.

I once asked a friend, “What do you look for in a woman?” He used his hands to demonstrate the shape of a woman’s behind and said, “A fat ass; that’s what I want, nigga.” I shook my head—I like curvy women, too, but there are much more important traits to keep in mind when looking for a woman.

Likewise, women should never throw themselves at a man just because “gurl, he’s cute.” Physical attraction alone does not guarantee a healthy, stable relationship. Sisters should stay away from a man if he is irresponsible. Black Sisters, keep those legs closed and examine a brother’s morals to see if he is worthy of you.

Among God’s proofs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, in order to have tranquility and contentment with each other, and God placed in your hearts love and care towards your spouses. In this, there are sufficient proofs for people who think.  [Quran 30:21]

Relying on him being “cute” will do no good; if you give birth to a child and its father is nowhere to be found, “cute” will not help you. If you are hurt emotionally because this brother was unable to control his sexual urges when another woman flirted with him, his “cuteness” will not help you. Sisters, there aren’t any brothers who are cute enough to justify breaking God’s commandments or acting irresponsibly.

And brothers, when you play games, cheat, and/or use manipulative tactics such as sweet-talking women, you are damaging both these women and yourself. You are preventing yourself from experiencing a healthy relationship and setting yourself up to habitually act inappropriately while in a relationship. Not only that, but when you’re in a sexual relationship with a woman and you cheat on her, you greatly increase the chances of spreading STDs.  Nowadays, it is not uncommon to hear brothers brag about having “sidechicks” as if this is some honorable thing.

You shall maintain chastity, not committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers.[Quran 5:5]

It isn’t just STDs from your cheating that can harm a woman. Emotionally, a woman can become permanently scarred from manipulative behavior, and when she starts a new relationship, it will be harder for her to be trusting and open with her partner. Women who have been hurt by men who cheat or otherwise bring unnecessary conflict into the relationship may never be able to fully recover from this emotional trauma, preventing them from ever having a healthy, loving relationship.

If you have no intentions of treating a woman with respect, committing to her, and providing for her, then don’t even go near her. Stop this immature attitude of “I’mma trynna bust a nut, nigga,” and control your sexual impulses. No woman deserves to be deceived or manipulated based on your lack of sexual control, and you should live based on good ethics and morals, not based on your sexual impulses.

All promiscuity will bring anyone are STDs, unwanted pregnancy, and heartbreak. There are many negative effects from living a promiscuous lifestyle. Even your self-respect can be damaged, which can lead you to engage in negative behavior that you would have otherwise avoided, such as drinking excessively, abusing drugs, or breaking the law. If you don’t have respect for yourself, then you won’t expect others to respect you, either; this can make it more likely that you will tolerate physical and/or emotional abuse in a relationship instead of leaving the relationship. Due to the nature of sex, it is all too easy to become emotionally attached to someone you’ve slept with, regardless of how they treat you or whether they’re even interested in more than your body. This is especially true for women.

Therefore, it is best to refrain from engaging in casual sex; if you wait until you are married to a responsible, emotionally stable, loving spouse, there are a great many benefits you will experience. It will be much less likely that either of you will contract an STD, you will have a committed husband who will support you if you have an unplanned pregnancy, both of you will be able to trust each other more, and the list goes on. If you are still unsure about what kind of lifestyle you want to have, think about your future spouse. Wouldn’t he or she be so much happier if you chose to wait for marriage before getting physical? In any case, you should remain chaste until marriage not only for your future spouse, but for your own emotional and physical wellbeing.

Open Challenge to Femen and Western Feminist Critics of Islam

femennnnnnFemen is a Western feminist organization whose agenda is to liberate Muslim women from patriarchy. They provocatively parade around naked with their breasts showing tattooed pseudo-Islamic phrases, like ‘Topless Jihad,’ on their bodies in mockery of Muslim principles. When Muslim women took a stand against their claim that Islam oppresses them, femen insisted that Muslim women are actually oppressed and that slaves have a long history of denying their enslavement. Many have attempted to say Femen is simply a fringe organization among feminist; unfortunately Western feminism has a long and shameful history of racist and orientalist behavior.

While many modern feminists consider ‘Femen’ to be a fringe organization, many mainstream feminist organization – although not displaying the bizzare antics of Femen – share the beliefs that Abrahamic religion in general, including Islam, is patriarchal and oppressive to women.

Yet, Yvonne Ridley, a white female journalist who was captured by the Taliban, decided to study the Qu’ran to look for motivation behind Taliban actions – only she found none. She converted to Islam and has referred to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad and the Qu’ran as a manga carta for women.[1]

Despite never actually reading the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, Femen continues to criticize Islam as a source for oppressing women:

“Sisters, we don’t care how many times your men are praying, but we care a lot what do they do in between. We care a lot about violence and aggression, we care a lot when your fathers, brothers and husbands are raping and killing, when they call to stone your sisters, we care a lot when they burn embassies etc., and all that for Allah!”[2]

It is clear that Inna Shevchenko has done very little to no research on Islam when reaching out to “muslim sisters,” something that could perhaps help her in her ‘cause.’  In Pre-Islamic Arabia, when rape went completely unpunished as Muhammad took control of Mecca, he instituted capitol punishment for such an offense. Killing outside of self-defense is also forbidden in the Qu’ran. Yet, this is the sort of Islamophobia that permeates the secular feminist movement. When a man who claims to be Muslim rapes a woman, for some strange reason Islam is to blame – despite the fact that rape is not allowed in Islam. But when a man who claims to be Christian rapes a woman, hardly any blame is placed on his religion.

femenfemenIt is also unclear why Muslim opposition to U.S embassies in their land is tied to oppressing women. Unfortunately, due to America’s foreign policy, many Muslim nations are hostile to signs of Western or U.S dominance.  This has absolutely nothing to do with sexism on the part of the Muslim world. Is Inna’s argument somehow that these embassies are needed to liberate “Muslim Women?”
In all honesty, Inna Sohevchenko, the leader of Femen, does not seem to be well-read or intelligent at all with regards to Islam. If Inna’s claim is that Islam oppresses, it would benefit her greatly to actually study the religion and not get her perception of Islam based upon Fox News narratives. Also, if Islam does indeed oppress women, it should be relatively easy for Femen to meet the following challenge:

Name a single historical figure that has effectively elevated the social status of women in their respective society as Muhammad did for the women of Arabia.

Concerning Muhammad’s devotion to Women’s Rights one author states:

“The right to vote, to inheritance, education, a role in politics and civic society were controversial and groundbreaking ideas that Muhammad promoted for women in a seventh century society that regarded them as mere possessions. Considering women in Britain received the right to vote, inherit and own property thirteen centuries later, Muhammad’s campaigns were both radical and revolutionary.”[3]

Muhammad’s devotion to women’s rights is something that is acknowledged even by secular historians. This is a basic fact of history, but the idea that Muhammad was an emancipator of women may come as a shock to many feminist like Inna. We live in a world where slander and misinformation about the Prophet Muhammad runs rampant throughout the media.

When we look at the truly oppressive condition of women in Pre-Islamic Arabia, and look at the timeframe at which Muhammad successfully overturned these various rituals and customs and secured various rights for women, we can conclusively say that no one accomplished what this man accomplished. No one has effectively waged a revolution to emancipate women as Muhammad did for the women of Arabia. Not bell hooks, not Susan B. Anthony, and certainly not Inna Shevchenko.

Muhammad & Female Infanticide

Muhammad, the last prophet of Islam, was born into an oppressive patriarchal environment and decided to combat non-imaginary patriarchal practices in his society unlike Inna. One of these patriarchal practices was female infanticide; in his society it was common practice to bury some female offspring alive in the ground to kill them.  This was because females were not valued at all in society and people desired to have a son. Even in India and China today, female infanticide that Muhammad ridded in his society is quite common. Instead of running around naked seeking to challenge the imaginary oppression of women under Islam, perhaps Inna Shevchenko could challenge female infanticide in India and China like Muhammad did in Arabia.

But, of course, she won’t do this. Inna Shevchenko’s point of attention continues to be the white woman’s burden of saving Muslim women from their “patriarchal religion.” However, the holy-book of this “patriarchal religion” explicitly outlawed this patriarchal practice 1400 years ago. Not only did the holy book that Muhammad brought outlaw this practice, but he went from being a persecuted member of his society to conquering this patriarchal society and outlawing female infanticide within a span of 20 years. [4]

The fact is Muhammad secured basic property, inheritance, and social rights for women long before the secular west.Muhammad Qutb, writes:

“She wants economic independence and the right to participate in social life directly. Well, Islam was the first religion that gave her this right:

She wants the right to education? Islam not only recognizes it but makes the acquisition of it obligatory on her as well.

Does she want the right not to be given in marriage without her permission? Islam has given her this right as well as the right to arrange her own marriage….

Also does she want the right-to go and work outside? Islam recognizes this right of her too.

Or does she seek the freedom to indulge in base, degrading and humiliating sybaritic? Well Islam cannot grant this to her as it does not also allow men to degrade themselves by indulging in such depravities.”

So Muslim women were the first to have the right to property, education, and inheritance but what Muslim women do not have the right to do is behave in a degrading manner like the women of Femen.

The Prophet Muhammad, once said “The best of you are those who behave well with their wives and I am best of you in behaving well with my wives.”

Of course, to Femen the fact that Muhammad established ethical codes to treat their wives is of no significance.   Indeed, according to them the entire sacred institution of marriage is patriarchal. The idea of “adultery’ is silly and marriage is an unnecessary restriction- women should have the right to sleep  with as many people as they please

Muhammad’s securing of Female Education

Seeking knowledge is incumbent upon every Muslim, male and female.”—The Prophet Muhammad

The Prophet Muhammad openly encouraged that males and females pursue education. Ayesha became a renowned scholar in early Islamic society. Due to the Prophet Muhammad’s emphasis on education for women—a remarkable Muslim woman named Nana Asma rose to power in the Sokoto Caliphate in modern day Nigeria. She emphasized the education of women and leadership positions for women, drawing upon the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. She oversaw universities dedicated to teaching women at a time women in the secular worlds were barred from this opportunity, and she was herself a scholar who spoke and wrote prolifically in multiple languages. She implemented so many reforms that elevated the social status of women that many feminists have attempted to co-opt her legacy and label her a ‘feminist.’ Yet Nana Asma’s work drew upon the Sunna of the Prophet Muhammad, not feminism, and her story indicates conclusively that Islam encouraged and welcomed education for women.[6]

Muhammad’s securing of Divorce Rights and Marriage Rights for Women

Muhammad was born into a 7th century Arabian environment where women had no say so in divorce or marriage. When a woman’s husband died, she was forced to marry a son that the man obtained through another marriage. If she refused, then she was exiled and forced to go out into the desert to fend for herself. After a year, she could return – but only after a barbaric practice wherein camel feces was splattered on her. After obtaining control of Medina and Mecca, Muhammad put an end to such bizarre rituals and gave women a full say so in marriage and divorce. In fact, one of the unique feats of Islamic marriages in comparison to secular Western marriages is that women keep their last name and are not obligated to take the last name of their husband. Also, Muhammad was known to encourage divorces for women who were victims of domestic abuse and discouraged women from marrying men who were known to be physically abusive towards women. Although this may seem normal in today’s society, and one may know many people who have spoken out against abusive relationships—Muhammad of 1400 years ago was born in a society when violence against women was the norm—and yet he was able to reverse this mindset[7].

Muhammad & the First Intersectional Approach in History

The early feminist movement has been criticized for their racism and exclusive focus on the needs of white women while ignoring black women. Because of this, this gave rise to “Black Feminism” which puts emphasis on race, class, and sex based analysis.

Muhammad’s revolution against the misogyny of Meccan society had no such problems with racism and constituted arguably “the first intersectional approach” in history. Muhammad has a good relationship with his foster mother Umm Ayman – the black woman who raised him and who Muhammad guaranteed paradise. Bilal, a black former slave owned by Arab Pagans, was freed by Muhammad and appointed to the position of Muezzin. Usama Zayd was a former black slave who Muhammad adopted as his son and eventually appointed to the position of general. As stated earlier, Nana Asma was an example of a black female scholar who drew upon the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad to advocate women’s rights in Nigeria. The point is that Islam ensured racial justice unlike the early feminist movement; also, Muhammad was a champion for poor people in his society because he implemented Zakat which took a percentage of the money of the rich and redistributed it to the poor. Additionally, he guaranteed every citizen in Medina the basics of food, clothing and shelter. Concerning this intersectional approach, one author writes:

“From his earliest days he [Muhammad] had a deep sympathy for widows and orphans, the poor and the helpless. He would ever stand by the oppressed. He vindicated the rights of women over men, of slaves over their masters, of the ruled over the rulers, and of the subjects over the king. Negro slaves were accorded the same position of honour as the Quraish leaders.”

To Meet the Challenge

To begin with, the aforementioned accomplishments of Muhammad are by no means exhaustive but give a general sense of how Muhammad reversed patriarchal practices and ensured social justice.

  • Muhammad, within a span of 20 years, was able to outlaw female infanticide and other barbaric patriarchal practices of Meccan society.
  • Muhammad, 1400 years ago, secured marriage, property, inheritance, and divorce rights for women.
  • Muhammad’s society was far more oppressive and consisted of many more barbaric practices than even 19th century Western society. The way he was able to end such rituals and implement social justice for women in such a short time span is truly unprecedented in human history.
  • While many feminist movements worked within the state, Muhammad operated outside his society and within 20 years conquered it.

To Femen: can you name a single historical figure that has effectively elevated the social status in their respective society as Muhammad did for the women of Arabia? Someone who advocated property, inheritance, marriage, and divorce rights for women that either was around before Muhammad or in the same era? Can you name a single historical figure who was able to secure such rights for women as early as Muhammad did in Arabia? Can you name a single historical figure who waged such a successful revolution for women’s rights in their society as Muhammad did in Arabia?

Please, attempt to meet the challenge based upon sound research – not a Fox News narrative of Islam or false information from anti-Islam websites.  If you cannot what Anita Rai has written will remain;

“For me it is enough that Muhammad is the greatest feminist the world has so far had but has so little come to know of… Personally I am infinitely grateful to Muhammad, who has not only empathized with the crying voice of the despairing and exploited woman but has taken momentous measures blustering all opposition, to alleviate her lot and strengthen her in realistic terms. For ages and ages, a woman had found herself begging and groveling in front of her male master, with her heart-wrenching pleas for justice remaining unheard and unaddressed. Muhammad had changed this forever.”

What Liberals Can Learn From The Prophet Muhammad

1)Avoiding Corruption

Political corruption runs rampant in the modern world, and democrats are no exception to this rule. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, Sandi Jackson, were suspended from their positions for spending money from their workplace on meaningless material items such as Michael Jackson busts. While he was the head of state, the Prophet Muhammad was financially frugal and never wasted money on unnecessary material goods. Any extra money that the Muslim treasury accrued, Muhammad would give directly to the poor.

Muhammad’s frugality was, at times, extreme; he hated to have extra food of his own at any meal for fear that he was causing someone else to go without food. His habits of giving to the poor so frequently, along with his inclination to avoid material wealth, almost brought his marriage to a breaking point.

In the present day, numerous politicians accept bribes on a regular basis and allow lobbyists to sway their decisions regarding various social and economical policies. Muhammad’s integrity during his life was exemplary; when he began teaching the oneness of God, advocating for slaves to be freed and for women’s rights, he was offered many bribes. These included political positions, vast riches, and the most beautiful of women. Holding steadfast to his values, the Prophet Muhammad turned down all of these offers, and told the people that if they were able to give him the sun in his right hand and the moon in his left hand, still he would not be swayed.

2) Being Trustworthy and Keeping Promises

As mentioned earlier, many politicians lie and make false promises in an attempt to gain political advantage. Muhammad never engaged in such behavior, and even before reaching prophethood, he was known as “The Trustworthy One.” One day, he learned of an assassination attempt made on his life by a certain Arab Pagan tribe. Muhammad escaped from his place of residence before he could be confronted, but intentionally left his cousin, Ali, there; when the intruders broke in, ready to kill Muhammad, Ali gave them money. Muhammad had borrowed that money from the tribe years ago when he was a businessman, and although he knew they were intent on killing him, he kept to his promise to pay them back.

The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of being honest; one passage reads: “You should not speak partial truth but the whole truth, and not mix the truth with falsehood [Al-Quran Chapter 2: Verse 42]. Nor you should present a lie in the guise of truth[quranicteachings.org/category]. “

If politicians adopted the practice of being honest in all dealings, they would no longer have to fear others finding out their secret affairs or stress over getting caught in a lie. Rather than circling around in debates, “flip-flopping” on political issues in a never-ending attempt to please each and every voter, politicians could concentrate on providing solid, convincing reasons to back up their views and even influence voters who originally had differing viewpoints. This would give them the advantage of being able to expand their plans and make a good idea great, rather than having a host of different opinions on the same issue and never doing anything productive about it.

3)  Avoiding All Drugs.

Though some of the drugs available today were also used in his time, the Prophet Muhammad never drank alcohol or used drugs. Additionally, he forbade his followers from using drugs, as they have a destructive impact upon the mind. The Qur’an states: “Satan only wants to cause hostilities among you all with alcoholic drinks and gambling. So strictly avoid it in order that you may be successful.”

Contrary to this ideal of sobriety and freedom from mind-altering drugs, many leftist activist groups in the 21st century seem to embrace the use of marijuana and alcohol. For every Anti-Drug commercial, television watchers are bombarded with multiple advertisements for alcohol.   Many liberals have gone so far as to advocate for the legalization of cannabis, and even President Obama has joked about having smoked weed in his youth. A pro-marijuana subculture has arisen in which many liberals are a part because they think it’s cool to use drugs.

But the consumption of alcohol, which numbs the senses and gives users an altered state of mind, is certainly not safe, and scientists admit to being unsure about the potential dangers of marijuana usage. Alcohol has long caused the deaths of innocent people due to car accidents caused by drunk drivers, and for some, alcoholism is an addiction that leads them into the depths of despair. Because of the disastrous impact on society, alcohol is condemned in the Qur’an.

If politicians adapted to this code of living and encouraged members of society to do the same—whether through speeches, legislature, or any other method—the nation as a whole would become healthier, people would have clearer minds, and it seems likely that the crime rate would decrease, too.
